The State Key Laboratory of Radiation Medicine and Protection is established to meet the major needs of people’s health, nuclear safety and sustainable development of nuclear energy in China. Its predecessor is the Key Laboratory of Radiation Medicine and Protection of Jiangsu Province. In order to further promote the discipline, it united the Key Laboratory of Stem Cells and Biomedical Materials of Jiangsu Province. After more than ten years of construction, it has become the only state key laboratory in the field of radiation medicine and protection in China.

Nowadays, the laboratory has a team of talents engaged in radiation medicine and interdisciplinary scientific fields, which is composed of academicians, chief scientists of national key projects, scholars of the thousand talents plan and the winner of the national science fund for distinguished young scholars. The optimizing professional team covers radiation medicine, radiation protection, hematology, clinical medicine, pharmacy, material science, chemistry, etc. The gross area of the laboratory is approximately 16000 square meters, and the total value of the scientific instruments and equipment is more than 200 million yuan.

The laboratory has made significant contributions in the fields of nuclear radiation monitoring during the first atomic bomb explosion, high background radiation investigation, radiation epidemiological investigation of nuclear industry employees, treatment of acute radiation-induced injury, evaluation of nuclear power plant site, nuclear technology industries, professional training of radiation personnel, etc. Directed by the major needs of national modernization and social development, the laboratory carries out high-quality innovative basic research and applied research, including radiation biological effects and mechanisms, advanced radiation diagnosis and treatment, and radiation protection.

We aim to build a state key laboratory with distinctive characteristics, original achievements, international leading levels and high reputation both here and abroad through construction of outstanding talent team, state-of-the-art scientific platform, innovative institutional mechanism. The laboratory provides a solid scientific foundation to guarantee the progression of radiation medicine and protection of China and protect our nuclear safety, national defense and people’s health.
