Prof. Chai graduated from Fudan University in 1964, majored in radiochemistry. During 1980-1982, he was sponsored by the Humboldt Foundation and engaged in the research of nuclear technology and its application at the Cologne University, Germany. After that, he successively worked at Purdue University in US, Strassburg Nuclear Research Center in France, Delft University and ECN Energy Research Center in Netherlands, and Tokyo Metropolitan University in Japan. He has devoted himself to the development of nuclear technology and nuclear analysis methodology and applied them in several interdisciplinary fields. His representative achievements cover the research area of the molecular-neutron activation analysis of several important elements, the abundance characteristics of platinum group elements, metallonomics, environmental toxicology and nano-safety, fast neutron spectroscopy at nuclear explosion sites, and so on. Prof. Chai is closely engaged in the research of radiopharmaceuticals, nuclear chemistry and nano-biological effects. He is/has been in charge of several major research plans/programs and state key programs of the National Natural Science Foundation. Till now, he has authored/co-authored over  600 papers, including Nature and Nature titled journals, Chem Soc Rev, PNAS, JACS, Nano Lett, etc., as well as 8 Chinese books and 5 English books, and given more than 60 plenary or keynote presentations at important international conferences. He is/was the Titular Member of IUPAC, a Fellow of RSC, and a member or advisor of other 5 international Scientific Societies. He is also a member of the editorial board of 4 international journals, such as Radiochimica Acta, Metallomics, and 10 domestic journals. Prof. Chai is a member of the National anti-Nuclear Terrorism Group of China. So far, Prof. Chai has won 9 national and ministerial level awards, including the National Science Conference Award, the Second Prize of National Natural Science Award, the Second Prize of National Science and Technology Progress, and the First Natural Science Prize of Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 2005, he was awarded the George von Hevesy Award-the premier international award in the field of radioanalytical chemistry and nuclear chemistry, becoming the first winner of this prize from the developing countries. He was awarded the title of the highly cited scientists in the field of pharmacology and toxicology by Thomson Reuters in 2014 and by Elsevier in 2016.Now, he is in charge of the major program of “Research on the Chemistry of Actinide Elements in Complex Systems for Spent Fuel Reprocessing” supported by the National Natural Science Foundation, the Collaborative Innovation Center of Radiological Medicine of Jiangsu Higher Education Institutions, a project funded by the Priority Academic Program Development of Jiangsu Higher Education Institutions (PAPD), Suzhou "Famous City, Famous School" project, and so on.
